November 2003
Ed visited Aruba for the first time in late November 2003,
just prior to the CQWW CW contest, staying at the P49Y/P40L cottage and
contest station. As this was a birthday celebration trip
for Mary, his partner, there was no contesting and very little operation at all.
He did get on for some CW operation and occasional SSB schedules with owners AE6Y
(P49Y) and W6LD (P40L) back in California. However, the tantalizing
presence of such a fine station during their visit was enough to cement Ed's
commitment to come back for a major contest operation. He obtained a
visitor's license good for one year and also the special call sign P40X for the
November 2003 trip, good for 30 days. This trip led to a number of
subsequent contest operations:
